Sustainability that pays: blu shower retrofits save Gulf hotels AED 12.4 million a year
Measured across 82 business cases, the blu Shower & Filter cuts shower water by 42.9% on average and pays for itself within 12 to 24 months — while hotel engineers report a better shower for guests.
: blu, the Dubai-based wellness technology company, today reported that installations of its blu Shower & Filter are saving hotel and healthcare operators AED 12.4 million (US$3.4 million) a year in water and energy costs. The figure is measured property by property across 82 business cases, and the typical installation pays for itself in 12 to 24 months.1,5
Extending the same measured per-unit savings to blu’s full installed base of 64,541 showers across 165 properties — 153 of them in the UAE — the estimated total rises to AED 20.2 million (US$5.5 million), one million cubic metres of water and around 5,900 tonnes of CO2e a year.1,3
For decades, hotels have cut shower water with low-flow heads and restrictors, at the cost of the shower experience.11 blu’s system pairs a stainless-steel sediment filter with a flow regulator calibrated to each property, cutting flow by an average of 42.9% while holding pressure and spray.9 There is no construction and no change to existing plumbing. The savings are measured before and after installation in a sample of rooms at every property, in front of the hotel’s own engineers, and each business case is built on the hotel’s own occupancy, guest and fuel-cost data.2
Constantin Ban Lushoo, Director of Engineering at Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island, an Accor property in Ras Al Khaimah, said: “Since installing blu showers, we have consistently achieved monthly savings in water consumption, which has contributed directly to our environmental goals while maintaining excellent service standards. We have also seen an improvement in guest experience due to better water flow quality and enhanced shower performance.”8
blu holds vendor agreements covering the Middle East and Africa with six international hotel groups — Accor, IHG, Marriott, Millennium, Minor Hotels and Wyndham — and its showers are installed in properties operated by Hilton, Hyatt, Radisson, Jumeirah, Emaar Hospitality, Kempinski, Wasl Hospitality, Aldar Hospitality, Ishraq Hospitality and Action Hotels, as well as at Mediclinic healthcare facilities.4 At RAK National Hotels, part of RAK Hospitality Holding, two properties recorded savings of around 42,000 cubic metres of water a year, alongside improved guest satisfaction at both hotels.7 In surveys run by six hotels between 2016 and 2020, including Crowne Plaza, Pullman, Wyndham and Radisson Blu properties, between 82% and 89% of the 272 guests and executives surveyed rated the overall shower experience positively at every property; at the three hotels that asked, 81% to 89% said they would want the shower at home.6 That demand is already visible at retail, where the home version of the same shower has sold more than a million units across the GCC and ranks as a category
best-seller on Amazon.ae.10
Eng. Ahmed Elgibaly, CEO and Founding Partner of blu, said: “Hotels were told for years that saving water meant a weaker shower. We have spent seventeen years proving the opposite, one property at a time, with the hotel’s own engineers holding the measuring bucket. Dubai has now made sustainability a condition of doing business in hospitality. Our numbers show that meeting it is not a cost to absorb — it is one of the better investments a hotel can make.”
The regulatory backdrop is in place. Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism requires hotels to meet 19 Sustainability Requirements under its Dubai Sustainable Tourism framework, including energy and water management plans [1]. In July 2026 the programme awarded its Sustainable Tourism Stamp to a record 237 hotels, 55% more than the previous year, in line with the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy [2]. On 31 August, Emirates Environmental Group launched the Emirates Hospitality Sustainability Alliance, naming energy and water consumption among the sector’s chief challenges [3], consistent with the UAE’s National Tourism Charter [4].
Global hotel groups are embedding the same measures. Accor’s 2026 Sustainability Innovation Program is focused specifically on scouting and piloting water-saving technologies [5]; IHG has integrated high-efficiency, low-flow showerheads and taps into its global brand standards, citing savings of around 11 litres per minute per shower [6]; and Wyndham Green Certification lists water-efficient showerheads among its Level 2 Essential measures [7]. All three hold vendor agreements with blu.
Lars Mourey, COO and Founding Partner, said: “Hotels are told sustainability is the right thing to do. Our business cases show it is also the profitable thing to do. A retrofit that pays for itself in 12 to 24 months, and then keeps paying every year after, is not a sustainability cost. It is a return.”
Notes to editors
- Savings data. 82 published business cases covering 39,663 shower units, recorded in blu’s consolidated Water & Energy Savings report for hospitality and healthcare as at 29 August 2026, document 621,819 cubic metres of water, 14,433,583 kWh of water-heating energy and AED 12,397,458 (US$3.4 million at 3.6725) saved a year. A further 24,878 units across 84 properties are covered by earlier-format business cases or by deliveries below the business-case quantity; applying the documented per-unit rates to these gives an installed-base estimate of 64,541 units, approximately 1.01 million cubic metres, 23,486,823 kWh and AED 20.2 million (US$5.5 million) a year. The documented figures are measured; the installed-base figures are an extrapolation from them. Copies of individual business cases are available from the media contact.
- Measurement method. At each property, 5–10 rooms are sampled across the building. The existing shower is opened and its output measured for one minute with a calibrated bucket or bag; the blu unit is then installed and measured in the same way, in front of the hotel’s engineering team, who verify both the flow and the spray. The 42.9% figure is the simple average flow reduction across the 82 business cases. Annual volumes are calculated from the measured reduction using the hotel’s own average occupancy, guests per room, showers per occupied room and shower duration. Heating energy is the energy required to raise the saved water from 30°C to 60°C. The AED saving is priced at each hotel’s actual water and fuel tariffs.
- Carbon. Most blu client hotels heat water with LPG; some use diesel or electricity. blu has therefore adopted a conservative basis: the UK Government (DESNZ/DEFRA) 2026 greenhouse-gas conversion factor for LPG combustion, approximately 0.214 kg CO2e per kWh of fuel, adjusted for an assumed 85% boiler efficiency — about 0.25 kg CO2e per kWh of heat delivered. On that basis the documented saving is approximately 3,600 tonnes of CO2e a year, and the installed-base estimate approximately 5,900 tonnes. Had blu applied DEWA’s 2023 grid-electricity factor of 0.4041 kg CO2e per kWh to all heating, the figures would be 5,833 and 9,491 tonnes respectively; the lower figures are used. The carbon saving is calculated within each business case on this LPG basis; the underlying cases are available for audit on request (note 1). Source: gov.uk – Government conversion factors for company reporting.
- Installed base and client groups. Vendor agreements covering the Middle East and Africa are held with six international hotel groups (Accor, IHG, Marriott, Millennium, Minor Hotels and Wyndham). blu’s consolidated savings report records 165 hotel and healthcare properties, including some operated by groups without a group-level vendor agreement; 153 of the 165 properties (92.7%) are in the UAE, with the remainder elsewhere in the Gulf. blu’s announcement of 17 August 2026 referred to nearly 100 hotels; that figure counted hotels under group vendor agreements, whereas the present figure counts all properties in the consolidated savings report. A property list is available from the media contact on request.
- Payback. A typical installation recovers its cost within 12 to 24 months. The period depends chiefly on occupancy (more showers taken, faster payback) and on the flow rate of the showers being replaced (higher existing flow, larger saving). Payback is calculated within each business case from the installation cost and the measured annual saving; the underlying cases are available for audit on request (note 1).
- Guest surveys. Conducted by the hotels themselves between 2016 and 2020 at six properties, including Crowne Plaza, Pullman, Wyndham and Radisson Blu hotels: 100 and 110 frequent-stay guests at two properties, 11 and 17 executives at two, and 17 guests at each of two others (272 respondents in total). Percentages are the share of respondents rating the item positively. Overall shower experience scored 82–89% at every property; “would you like this shower at home” scored 81–89% at the three properties where it was asked. Consolidated results are available on request.
- RAK National Hotels. From a recommendation letter dated 19 December 2021 signed by Alison Grinnell, then General Manager, RAK National Hotels LLC and Chief Executive Officer, RAK Hospitality Holding LLC, recording an average reduction of 115 cubic metres a day across two properties (around 42,000 cubic metres a year) and improved guest satisfaction at both.
- Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island quotation. From a recommendation letter dated 17 November 2025 signed by Constantin Ban Lushoo, Director of Engineering, Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah, lightly edited for length and used with permission. Accor holds a Middle East and Africa vendor agreement with blu.
- Product. Each hotel unit combines a 1,000-mesh stainless-steel filter that removes solid sediment from shower water with a flow regulator from Neoperl, the German-Swiss flow-control specialist, calibrated to the property. The head opens fully for cleaning and legionella swabbing, which hotel engineers cite as simplifying Dubai Municipality hygiene compliance. blu’s NMC filtration media is certified to NSF/ANSI 42, and performance claims are supported by independent testing from TÜV, SGS and Eurofins.
- Retail rankings. As at 1 September 2026, the blu Ionic Shower & Filter ranked as a category best-seller on Amazon.ae (Best Sellers in Showerhead Filters: amazon.ae/gp/bestsellers/home-improvement/12356899031). The blu Ionic Shower & Filter is the retail version of the shower supplied to hotels (note 9); more than one million units have been sold across the GCC. Marketplace rankings change daily. Customer-rating and units-sold figures are company-compiled across sales channels and product generations. A dated screenshot of the ranking and the underlying listing records are available from the media contact.
- Conventional measures. Standard shower water-efficiency measures — low-flow showerheads, flow restrictors and retrofit options — are documented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: EPA WaterSense, “Showerheads” (www.epa.gov/watersense/showerheads).

DRAFTING NOTES FOR blu — DELETE THIS PAGE BEFORE DISTRIBUTION
Items in red in the release are placeholders or need sign-off. Checklist:
- Dateline: insert the distribution date before sending (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE chosen 3 September; embargo line deleted).
- Quote approvals: Ahmed Elgibaly and Lars Mourey have approved their quotes as they appear in this version (confirmed 3 September 2026; Ahmed’s earlier approval of 2 September carried over from Draft 3). The Mövenpick quote as published — condensed from the November 2025 letter in Draft 4 — was reviewed and approved internally on 3 September; it runs on the letter’s existing permission, and no further approvals will be sought from hotels.
- Note 10 (retail rankings) — distribution-morning check: open the printed Amazon.ae category link and confirm (a) it resolves and (b) the blu Ionic still shows the Best Seller badge in Showerhead Filters; take the fresh dated screenshot (see media assets). If the badge has slipped, the claim stands as written — it is dated 1 September — but expect the question. Also click the seven reference links and the note links once; a dead link in the notes block is an instant credibility hit. The “50K five-star reviews” figure stays out (decided 3 September). Future releases: total count plus average rating, dated, company-compiled.
- Media assets: no press-kit folder — PNG files are sent with the release (photos of the founding partners and of installations at major hotels). Use only installation shots from properties cleared to be named; confirm each image is cleared for editorial use, captioned and credited; keep total attachments under ~10 MB for newsroom inboxes. Substantiation records — business cases, unit specifications and savings data — remain with the media contact and blu head office for audit upon request. Do not send the internal Dropbox link. Include dated screenshots of the Amazon.ae category ranking with URL and timestamp visible — the 1 September capture plus a fresh one on the distribution morning.
- Media contact: email only — decided 3 September; no phone number will be published.
- Carbon and substantiation (verified 3 September against the fact-sheet workbook): every savings figure in notes 1 and 2, and note 3’s DEWA comparators, match the workbook exactly; the release keeps the conservative LPG carbon basis (3,600 t documented / 5,900 t installed base). LPG carbon calculations confirmed in the business cases (3 September); note 3 now cites them — no fact-sheet build needed. Keep the savings infographic on the release’s LPG figures (3,600 t / 5,900 t), not the DEWA comparators. Payback derivation in note 5 confirmed against the business cases (3 September).
- Headline settled (“Gulf hotels”, 3 September); “UAE” and percentages stay out: use “more than 90% of the properties are in the UAE” in pitch emails to UAE desks.
- The 17 August announcement said “nearly 100 hotels”; note 4 explains the reconciliation. Be ready for the question. Also be ready for: “why is the freshest guest data from 2020?” — the surveys predate the mandate, so the guest case was proven before compliance required it; note 6 gives dates and sample sizes, and the retail bridge (note 10) carries the current guest evidence.
- Rotana is not named anywhere (not cleared). Hilton is no longer quoted; it remains in the install-site list, which is cleared.
- Distribution: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, no exclusive (decided 3 September). Simultaneous send to business desks (The National, Gulf Business, Arabian Business), trade (Hotelier Middle East, TTN, Hospitality Net) and wire. Sunday–Tuesday morning Gulf time. An Arabic version will lift WAM and Al Bayan pickup.
- Web version (bludubai.com): post with the notes-to-editors block intact — it is what search engines and AI answer engines cite. Title tag: “blu Shower Retrofits Save Gulf Hotels AED 12.4m a Year”; slug: /blu-shower-retrofits-gulf-hotels-aed-12-4-million; meta description: “Measured across 82 business cases, the blu Shower & Filter cuts shower water 42.9% and saves hotels AED 12.4m a year, paying back in 12–24 months.” Link “blu Shower & Filter” to the product page.
