In a landmark step for higher education and research in the region, The American University in Cairo (AUC) has announced the establishment of the Amelia Peabody Endowed Chair and Research Fund in Egyptology , the first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa and among only a few worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new endowed chair and fund aim to advance teaching, research, and fieldwork in Egyptology, made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor and the support of the Formi Legacy Foundation . This initiative underscores AUC\u2019s commitment to promoting cultural scholarship and preserving Egypt\u2019s rich archaeological heritage through innovative academic engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
AUC has appointed Dr. Salima Ikram , Distinguished University Professor of Egyptology and one of the world\u2019s leading archaeologists, as the inaugural holder of the Amelia Peabody Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ikram first joined AUC in 1985 as a study-abroad student, later returning as a faculty member in 1995. Since then, she has played a key role in developing the Egyptology Department, leading major field projects, and building international partnerships. Her extensive body of research and publications includes influential titles such as Ancient Egypt: An Introduction<\/em>, Death and Burial in Ancient Egypt<\/em>, and Divine Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The chair\u2019s name, \u201cAmelia Peabody,\u201d is inspired by the fictional Egyptologist protagonist of a popular historical novel series set in the late 19th century \u2014 a character who represents curiosity, courage, and a passion for discovery.
